RNC Already Scaling Back 2010 Prospects

They’ve gone from 130 seats down to 37-40 seats and it’s not even officially summer yet.

Gulf Oil Spill By The Numbers

"The Florida Keys, third longest barrier reef in the world, is a dead zone. Ninety percent of the big fish, the tuna, the sharks, and other things, are already gone in the oceans. There’s a dead zone in the Gulf Of Mexico every summer the size of New Jersey, where there’s not enough oxygen for things to live. So it’s not a question of ‘Can the oceans take any more?’ The oceans can’t take any more. They couldn’t take any more fifty years ago. The question is, when are we going to stop?" - Phillippe Cousteau, Jr.

Climate Denial Activists’ Parallel To Anti-relativity Movement Of 1920s

This world is a strange madhouse. Currently, every coachman and every waiter is debating whether relativity theory is correct. Belief in this matter depends on political party affiliation.”
So wrote Albert Einstein in a letter to his one time collaborator, the mathematician Marcel Grossmann in 1920.
"As I’ve documented elsewhere, prolific climate deniers such as Ian Plimer, James Delingpole and Christopher Booker who deliberately spread untruths on climate change can be wrong 99% of the time and right for less than 1% of the time and still ‘win the argument’ because the playing field simply isn’t level."
This is no a horse race, Democrats/environmentalists don't win or lose against Conservatives. It's science, not politics.

Joss Garman adds:

"It’s about environmentalists’ failure to persuade rather than the anti-scientific obscurantism that’s completely overtaken the Republican party, with financial support from large corporate interests….If I can’t convince a guy standing in a downpour that it’s raining, seems to me the dumb ass in the rain is the story, not my poor messaging.”

Republicans' New Web Site FAIL

A 'teacher' told my child in class that dolphins were mammals and not fish!" a third complains. "And the same thing about whales! We need TRADITIONAL VALUES in all areas of education. If it swims in the water, it is a FISH. Period! End of Story.

Lacking an agenda to run on, the Republican Party looked to its new website for suggestions from the people, soliciting ideas from the public on a thumbs-up thumbs-down standard. Call it the "Dancing With the Stars" model of public policy.

Granted these could be pranks, but judging the other ideas and suggestions of the "outraged" minority, no too far off the mark.

The Landrieu Four Plead Guilty

"The four defendants who were arrested in January in Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office in the Hale Boggs federal complex in New Orleans pleaded guilty Wednesday morning in federal court to entering real property belonging to the United States under false pretenses.

Magistrate Judge Daniel Knowles III sentenced Stan Dai, Joseph Basel and Robert Flanagan each to two years probation, a fine of $1,500 and 75 hours of community service during their first year of probation.

James O’Keefe, as leader of the group and famous for posing as a pimp in ACORN office videos, received three years of probation, a fine of $1,500 and 100 hours of community service."

Just like former Sen. Larry Craig [R-ID] who was arrested for lewd conduct and plead guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct, these guys claim they were innocent, too. Funny how that works.

Rand Paul Faces Possible Libertarian Challenge

"A week after a come-from-behind victory over the GOP's establishment candidate in a Kentucky Senate primary, Rand Paul is facing a possible challenge by the Libertarian Party and is shaking up his staff after comments he made about racial segregation caused a firestorm.

Despite his pedigree as the son of former Libertarian presidential candidate Ron Paul, Libertarian Vice Chairman Joshua Koch said Rand Paul has betrayed the party's values with stands he's taken, and they were considering finding a candidate to run for the seat."

"Rand Paul doesn’t actually have many libertarian views and is actually just another teabagging wingnut with a melange of corporatist and paleocon ideals." - John Cole

The CBO On The Stimulus: Better Than Expected

The CBO On The Stimulus

26 May 2010 11:59 am

There will be long term costs to it - on interest on the debt - but the Obama stimulus seems to have done much better than almost anyone expected:

CBO estimates that in the first quarter of calendar year 2010, ARRA’s policies:

  • Raised the level of real (inflation-adjusted) gross domestic product (GDP) by between 1.7 percent and 4.2 percent,
  • Lowered the unemployment rate by between 0.7 percentage points and 1.5 percentage points,
  • Increased the number of people employed by between 1.2 million and 2.8 million, and
  • Increased the number of full-time-equivalent (FTE) jobs by 1.8 million to 4.1 million compared with what those amounts would have been otherwise. (Increases in FTE jobs include shifts from part-time to full-time work or overtime and are thus generally larger than increases in the number of employed workers.)

The effects of ARRA on output and employment are expected to increase further during calendar year 2010 but then diminish in 2011 and fade away by the end of 2012.

The Obama stimulus seems to have done much better than almost anyone expected. We'll see how the liberal media bias covers this.

Paul Krugman: GOP Airbrushes America's Prosperous History

"The era of strong unions, high minimum wages, high top marginal tax rates, etc. was also a period of rapid growth and rising living standards. That doesn’t prove causation; it does disprove the widespread dogma that these things are always economically devastating. And it’s telling that so many on the right have airbrushed the whole postwar generation out of history."

Paul Krugman (via jonathan-cunningham)

Keep repeating the same made-up sh*t and their followers believe it all. Sad.

The 1950s had a top marginal tax of 90%. You only needed one job to have a wife, kids and a house. Putting your kids through school was easier. GOP hates that lifestyle. They would rather you work 3 jobs, struggle the entire time and borrow/mortgage everything.

Redistribution of taxes works. All ships rise in a rising tide.

Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story

Saw Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story last night. Highly recommend it. Add it to your queue. See how a Georgie boy, through South Carolina local politics, came on to the national scene through Ronald Reagan via Ed Rollins and focused politics on race and wedge issues. Atwater, and then Karl Rove and George W. Bush, perfected the win-at-all-costs politics that puts the race card, planted lies and fake patriotism in the forefront as they rob the little guy from the back room. A must see!

You can see Atwater in the present day Tea Party/Palin/Beck "he's not one of us" Obama-is-a-scary-black-guy coded racism that influences many non-curious Americans. It has it's roots in the planted attacks on Kitty & Michael Dukakis, Bob Dole and Bill Clinton. History repeating.

[NOTE: Look at Bush's eyes in the clip below. Cocaine is very powerful drug.]

Jay Smooth: "Rand Paul, Stop Weaseling"

"Some people are taking this [Rachel Maddow] interview as proof that [Rand Paul is] a racist, that he supports discrimination. Now I don’t know if Rand Paul is racist. I don’t think this interview proves that he supports racism, but it does prove his ideal government just happens to be one that would open lots of door for racism and make discrimination of all kinds easier than it is now.
Does that prove that he’s some hard-core racist that doesn’t care about black people? No, but it does suggest he’s such a hard-core, purist libertarian that he cares more about this abstract set of principles than he cares about any actual people. That he’s more committed to these rigid abstractions than he is to protecting the basic rights of human beings in the real world. And if that’s the case, that means that this Civil Rights Act thing is just the tip of the iceberg.

That means there’s a whole lot of situations that where, if Rand Paul has to describe his beliefs in detail, his beliefs are going to sound really weird and alienating. And I think Rand Paul knows that, and that’s why he trying so hard not to describe his own beliefs in plain English."
Rand, who is against politics as usual, gives answers which are Southern politics as usual. He says he is not a racist, but is for a system that would allow racism. It's the race card that Lee Atwater and Karl Rove perfected. You can't say "n*gger, n*gger, n*gger" in the South, so you use a coded language. Opposing the Equal Rights laws resonates with his hick constituents.

Bush's Inconvenient Truth

The financial crisis of 2008 made it inevitable that unemployment would rise sharply through 2009. It also caused the budget deficit to skyrocket:

Yes, the debt largely is Bush's fault - and his predecessors'.

"Republicans have worked assiduously to blame these conditions on Obama's policies even though they were obviously caused by conditions he inherited. At the same time, they have worked relentlessly to create a social stigma around his efforts to push back."

Rand Paul Taking Page Out Of Palin Playbook

This rhetorical question says it all:
"What the hell was Rand Paul doing on MSNBC?" - Joe Scarborough
Politicians on the right will not venture beyond the safe confines of Fox News. "Meet The Press" had to be skipped as to preserve Rand Paul's cocoon. That being said, we all lose when politicians can not go on national TC to explain and debate their views that face the country.

The Fascination With Fluff

"If Sarah Palin endorsed me I would be too embarrassed to tell anyone…. I don’t know how you quit as the governor of your state and get taken seriously."

Rand Paul Not So Reality Friendly

Typical son of a privileged white guy
"Rand Paul's philosophy got in the way of reality." -- RNC Chair Michael Steele
MD [ophthalmology] from Duke University Medical School? Father was a surgeon turned Congressman? Elite? Who cares, but this guy should realize that not everyone has his options in life. Libertarians are just race conscious Republicans who have not drank the religious right kool aid, yet. It's a a label that gets slapped on everyone from Idaho militia members to Silicon Valley utopians to pro-choice Republicans in Greenwich.
