"Via Greg Sargent, I see that Republicans are planning on pretending to push for a balanced budget amendment. There’s no chance it will pass, but they think it’s polling well right now. When Republicans told everyone to get over the Bush 2000 theft of the Presidency because of the Supreme Court vote, they themselves can NEVER get over the Roe v Wade vote from 1973.
By Jon Chait’s tally, that brings the total number of constitutional amendments proposed by contemporary Republicans to 8. Three more (they’ll get there) and it will be more than the number of amendments in the original Bill of Rights.
It’s easy to chalk this up to contemporary tetardism. Certainly, it’s true that the main appeal of these proposed amendments is that they will never be passed. But there’s nothing new here: the modern Republican party is based largely on opposition to Civil Roghts and Roe v. Wade. There’s more to this than the Glenn Beck fans waving copies of the Constitution at Congressmen."
You can also see how the Gay Marriage Amendment from 2004 was just a ploy to get more GOP votes. Worked like a charm. Republicans are amazingly good at creating a faux cause to get what they want. WMD anyone?
